Causes of Nail Moons, White Spots, and Vertical Ridges

Are More Nail Moons Better?

Nail moons, the white crescent-shaped area at the base of your nails, are not necessarily better if they are more numerous. The size and number of nail moons primarily depend on individual nail growth rate, and the frequency and intensity of finger usage.

Some people have their nail matrix positioned further forward, making their nail moons appear larger and more prominent; while others have their nail matrix positioned further back, possibly hiding the nail moons partially or completely under the skin.

Do White Spots on Nails Indicate Calcium Deficiency?

Small white spots on nails are typically not a sign of calcium deficiency. These white spots are mostly caused by minor trauma, such as nail biting, nails hitting hard objects, or nails being squeezed and rubbed. These white spots will gradually disappear as the nails grow.

If the white spots continue to spread, it may be necessary to be alert for fungal infections.

Do Vertical Ridges on Nails Indicate Vitamin Deficiency?

Vertical ridges on nails, medically known as onychorrhexis, are a normal phenomenon that appears with age. These ridges do not indicate a vitamin deficiency.

However, if the vertical ridges on the nails increase significantly in a short period, it may be related to lack of sleep, increased stress, or insufficient nutrition (such as vitamin A deficiency).

Why Are Nails Soft and Brittle?

Soft and brittle nails can be related to various factors. Malnutrition, lack of sufficient protein, vitamins, or minerals (such as iron, zinc, and vitamin C) can lead to soft and brittle nails.

Additionally, prolonged soaking of hands in water, exposure to dry environments, and the use of certain chemicals can also affect the hardness and toughness of nails. If the texture of the nails changes significantly, it is recommended to consult a doctor to rule out potential health problems.
