Common Liver Function Tests and What They Indicate

Alanine Aminotransferase (ALT)

ALT is a sensitive marker that reflects liver cell damage and typically elevates when liver cells are injured.

Aspartate Aminotransferase (AST)

AST also indicates liver cell damage but may rise with heart muscle and other tissue injuries as well.

Alkaline Phosphatase (ALP)

ALP reflects bile flow or bile duct damage, but it may also increase in bone diseases.

Gamma-Glutamyl Transferase (GGT)

GGT is often associated with cholestasis (bile flow blockage) and may also be elevated in alcoholic liver disease.

Total Protein (TP) and Albumin (ALB)

These tests reflect the liver's synthetic function. Low albumin levels may indicate impaired liver synthesis.

Prothrombin Time (PT)

PT measures the liver's ability to synthesize clotting factors. A prolonged PT may suggest liver dysfunction.

Viral Hepatitis Markers

This includes testing for markers of hepatitis B virus (HBV) and hepatitis C virus (HCV).
