Control These 6 Body Indicators to Stay Healthy in Old Age (Part 1)

Walking Speed

Normal walking speed for adults is about 1.3-1.4 meters per second, while elderly people usually walk at about 0.8 meters per second. If an elderly person walks slower than 0.6 meters per second, they are considered to be walking slowly; if they walk faster than 1 meter per second, they are considered to be walking quickly. Walking quickly often indicates good cardiovascular and respiratory function, as well as healthy muscles and bones.

A healthy walking posture involves swinging the arms and taking big steps forward. If there are knee problems, using a cane might be advisable. It is important not to walk with hands behind the back, as this could cause instability and increase the risk of falls.

Calf Circumference

As people age, muscle mass decreases and muscle strength weakens, increasing the risk of falls and bone diseases, which further reduces mobility in elderly people.

Calf circumference can be used as an indicator of muscle mass. To measure, stand with feet 20 cm apart, relax the legs, and then measure the circumference of the right calf. If the calf circumference is less than 34 cm for men and 33 cm for women, there may be a risk of sarcopenia, and further consultation with a healthcare provider is recommended.
