How to Treat Constipation in Babies?

Generally, babies have four bowel movements a day. Breastfed babies have more frequent bowel movements compared to formula-fed babies. By around 2 years of age, the number of bowel movements typically decreases to about twice a day. If a baby goes several days without a bowel movement, they may be constipated. Treatment for constipation varies depending on the baby's age:

For babies over 2 months old: Increase fluid intake by giving an additional 50-100 ml of water twice a day. If there's no improvement, switch to fruit juices such as grape, pear, or apple juice, keeping the same amount and frequency.

For babies over 4 months old who are already eating solid foods: Offer high-fiber baby foods such as peas, peaches, pears, prunes, and spinach until constipation improves.

You can also apply a small amount of water-based lubricant to the baby's anus to help with bowel movements. However, never give babies laxatives or enemas.

If the baby continues to be constipated, or if the baby is only 2 months old or younger, it is best to see a doctor.
