Is Bladder Outlet Obstruction Serious? What Causes It?

Introduction

Bladder outlet obstruction (BOO) refers to any condition that blocks the flow of urine from the bladder into the urethra. The most common cause of BOO is benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH), or an enlarged prostate.

Other Causes of BOO
  • Prostate cancer
  • Urethral stricture caused by infection, injury, or surgery
  • Bladder outlet scarring due to injury or surgery
  • Bladder stones
  • Side effects of certain medications, such as antihistamines and decongestants
Symptoms of BOO

BOO can cause a variety of symptoms, including interrupted urine stream, weak urine flow, hesitancy in starting urination, difficulty in urination, and a feeling of incomplete bladder emptying. If left untreated, it can lead to bladder stones, bladder infections, and even permanent damage to the bladder detrusor muscle and kidneys. Therefore, timely diagnosis and treatment are crucial to prevent serious complications.
