Chewing gum increases saliva production. If you chew gum after a meal, the extra saliva can help neutralize and clear the acids released by breaking down food in your mouth, protecting your teeth from erosion. Additionally, the minerals in saliva can strengthen the hard outer layer of your teeth, known as enamel.
However, you should chew sugar-free gum. While sugar-containing gum also increases saliva production, the sugar in the gum can erode your teeth.
