Generally, having X-ray exams during pregnancy is safe, especially for non-abdominal X-rays. However, the risk is higher for prolonged radiation treatments.
During pregnancy, abdominal X-rays expose the developing fetus to radiation, which can cause mutations in rapidly growing cells, leading to birth defects or diseases such as leukemia. Overall, the risk is relatively low.
For other parts of the body (such as arms, legs, head, chest, teeth), X-rays are safer since the fetus is not exposed to radiation. To minimize exposure, doctors usually provide special protective clothing that blocks radiation.
Some X-ray exams can be substituted with ultrasounds. If you are pregnant, inform your doctor to avoid unnecessary X-ray exposure.
