Most children who take antidepressants see an improvement in their depression. However, combining medication with talk therapy (psychotherapy) may be more effective. Many types of psychotherapy may be helpful, but scientific research has shown that cognitive-behavioral therapy and interpersonal therapy are effective treatments for depression.
In cognitive-behavioral therapy, mental health professionals help children improve their coping skills, communication skills, and problem-solving skills. Children can also learn to recognize harmful thoughts and behaviors, replace them with positive ones, and manage their emotions.
This therapy focuses on relationships and helps adolescents adjust to changes in their current relationships and develop new ones.
For some children and adolescents with mild symptoms, talk therapy alone may be sufficient.
