What Causes a White Coating on the Tongue?

Introduction

A white coating on the tongue is usually temporary and not harmful. It is caused by inflammation of the papillae on the surface of the tongue. Food debris, bacteria, and dead cells can accumulate between the inflamed papillae, appearing as a white coating. Several conditions can lead to papillae inflammation, such as smoking, mild dehydration, excessive mouth breathing, and more. Here are some measures to prevent and improve a white tongue:

Preventive Measures
  • Regularly clean your tongue.
  • If you smoke, quit smoking.
  • Drink plenty of water.
  • Eat high-fiber foods.
  • Eating crunchy foods (such as apples) can also help remove debris from the tongue.
