Why is Blood Pressure Different in the Morning and Afternoon? Should You Be Concerned?

A person's blood pressure is usually lower at night while sleeping and upon waking up. After getting up, it gradually increases, reaching its peak around 2-3 PM, and then starts to decline.

If your blood pressure differs from this pattern, such as being higher in the morning than in the afternoon, it may indicate potential health problems, including:

  • Hypertension or poorly controlled blood pressure
  • Sleep apnea
  • Adrenal tumors
  • Kidney disease

Some risk factors for abnormal blood pressure fluctuations include:

  • Working shifts that require day and night rotation
  • Excessive caffeine intake
  • Smoking
  • High levels of stress
